Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure in which a small incision is made, usually in the navel, through which a viewing tube (laparoscope) is inserted. The viewing tube has a small camera on the eyepiece. This allows the doctor to examine the abdominal and pelvic organs on a video monitor connected to the tube. Other small incisions can be made to insert instruments to perform procedures. Laparoscopy can be done to diagnose conditions or to perform certain types of operations.Laparoscopic surgery involves less scarring, faster recovery, lesser discomfort, as there is minimal invasion as compared to open surgery.

Any surgery involves detailed study of a patient. Your doctor would ask you all possible questions about your lifestyle, eating habits, ailments, medications etc. before surgery. Always inform your doctor about any drug allergies or medical ailment or previous surgeries. He would also advise you particular tests that may be required depending on your condition and the type of surgery required. Once all that has been decided you may also want to zero down on a good hospital as advised by your doctor and ask the hospital for cashless facilities available.

Laparoscopy surgery typically involves lesser discomfort, shorter hospital stay and reduced scarring as compared to open surgery. Care is taken to control the pain along with faster recovery. Pain control drugs may be provided to you on perusal of your doctor.

Your doctor may inform you before the surgery itself on particular dietary guidelines that you may need to follow. Also a few lifestyle modifications may be introduced to you for faster recovery. You may be asked to quit smoking and drinking for a while. Adequate rest would be required and once you are allowed to get back to your normal daily activities you would still be advised against any strenuous activities.
